It is calculated using the spectral reflectance values obtained from multispectral or hyperspectral imagery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NDVI measures the difference between the near-infrared (NIR) and red light reflected by vegetation. It is based on the principle that healthy, actively growing vegetation absorbs most of the visible red light for photosynthesis and reflects a large portion of the near-infrared light. On the other hand, non-vegetated surfaces such as bare soil or water reflect more red light and absorb more near-infrared light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The formula for calculating NDVI is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NDVI = (NIR &#8211; Red) \/ (NIR + Red)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>NIR is the reflectance in the near-infrared spectral band<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Red is the reflectance in the red spectral band<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The resulting NDVI values range from -1 to +1. Here&#8217;s how to interpret the values:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Negative values (-1 to 0): These usually indicate non-vegetated surfaces like water, bare soil, or man-made structures.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Values close to zero: These indicate areas with little or no vegetation cover.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Values between 0 and 1: These represent areas with varying degrees of vegetation density and health. The higher the value, the denser and healthier the vegetation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NDVI is widely used in agriculture and environmental monitoring. It helps assess vegetation vigor, detect plant stress, identify areas of crop disease or pest infestation, monitor vegetation growth patterns, evaluate land cover changes, and support precision farming practices such as variable rate fertilization and irrigation.
